Marriage Licenses The Clerk is authorized to issue marriage licenses in the Province of Ontario. The fee for a license is $125.00 and is valid anywhere in Ontario for a period of three (3) months from the date of issue.
Here’s what you need to know about obtaining a marriage license:
| | | WHERE CAN YOU GET A LICENSE: A marriage license is available from the Town of Penetanguishene for marriages taking place anywhere in the Province of Ontario. | | | | | | | | AGE: Both parties must be at least 18 years of age. | | | | | | | | WHO CAN RECEIVE A MARRIAGE LICENSE: A marriage license can only be issued to the bride and/or groom. | | | | | | | | WHO MUST SIGN THE APPLICATION: Both parties must complete and sign the application form | | | | | | | | BLOOD TESTS/WAITING PERIODS: There are no blood tests or waiting periods required. | | | | | | | | IDENTIFICATION: Two pieces of identification are required: birth certificate, passport, citizenship papers - one piece must be photo identification. | | | | | | | | COST OF LICENSE: The license fee is $125.00 cash or interac only. | | | | | | | | LICENSE EXPIRATION: The license is valid for three months from the date of issue. | | | | | | | | DIVORCED: You require an original or Court certified copy of papers or Certificate of Divorce (issued by Canadian Courts only). | | | | | | | | HOW LONG UNTIL YOU RECEIVE YOUR LICENSE: Your license is completed at the Townhall, normally within 2 days of applying, without an appointment but if you’re in a hurry it’s always a good idea to let us know you’re coming. |
Special Circumstances
| | | GETTING MARRIED IN ANOTHER PROVINCE OR TERRITORY: If you’re getting married in another province or territory in Canada you must contact the province's or territory's vital statistics office for information. | | | | | | | | GETTING MARRIED IN ANOTHER COUNTRY: If you are planning to get married in another country, you may require a Marriage Letter (also known as a Search Letter or Letter of Non-Impediment) confirming that there is no record of a marriage for you registered in Ontario. You may obtain this letter by applying to the Office of the Registrar General. To get married in another country, you must contact the country's embassy or consulate for more information. | | | | | | | | DIVORCED OUTSIDE OF CANADA: If you were divorced outside of Canada, you must obtain authorization from the Minister of Consumer and Business Services before a marriage license can be issued to you. To obtain this authorization you will need to contact the Office of the Registrar General Marriage Office in Thunder Bay. |
