Main Street Reconstruction Update - July 6, 2018

Main Street ongoing reconstruction

Being as productive as possible, JB Enterprises fought through the heat this week to accomplish what they could while keeping the safety of their workers the main priority.  This has led to an understandably less productive week than what we have typically seen and is going to require the intersection at Robert Street and Main Street to remain closed for the weekend. Signage has been relocated to outside of the closure area to identify the business access routes and the detour routes have been prepared as per the Traffic Control Plan. We have witnessed many local businesses using Social Media to promote their businesses during the reconstruction and even gone as far as directing patrons to their business.  This is a great idea!  We circulate what we can from a Town perspective but each business owner has a specific reach to their own clientele so any messaging you can provide certainly helps. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending July 6th, 2018:

  • Robert Street and Main Street intersection closed and underground works underway;
  • Curb installed from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
  • Sanitary, Storm, and Water services installed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street;
  • Excavation, Granular and sub-drain placement on Main Street south from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street;
  • Temporary watermain has been commissioned from Robert Street to Jeffery Street;
  • Relocated sanitary bypass to Poyntz Street intersection, which is then discharging to the Manhole on Maria Street; and,
  • Concrete Road Base has been removed in the intersection of Main Street and Robert Street.

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of July 9th, 2018 to July 13th, 2018:

  • Continue Robert Street and Main intersection underground works;
  • Curb installation from Water Street/Simcoe Street intersection and continue South;
  • Concrete Planter Curb Installation in the reconstructed areas;
  • Asphalt will be placed on Main Street from Tessier Lane to the Water Street/Simcoe Street Intersection;
  • Watermain swabbing, flushing, and testing from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street; and,
  • Sidewalk installation from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street.

JB Enterprises has advised the Town that they will be working on Saturday in preparation for the asphalt to be placed between Tessier Lane and the intersection of Water Street/Simcoe Street.

With the intersection at Robert Street closed, there has been a significant amount of traffic detouring to both Owen Street and Maria Street.  Please pay attention to the newly placed NO PARKING signs that have been installed along the West side of Maria Street as parking in this area restricts the movement of vehicles from Robert Street East to Jeffery Street.  This action is only a temporary one until the contractor is able to move the sanitary bypass beyond Poyntz Street.

Also, if you are coming into Town from the West end (Lafontaine Road and Champlain Road), unless your destination is in the vicinity of Robert Street and Main Street, it is advised that you use the alternate detour routes posted at Benson Street to access Poyntz Street and avoid congesting the Owen Street and Robert Street Intersection.

Finally, Access to Peel Street between Robert Street East and Simcoe Street will be maintained for as long as possible, but please pay attention to the fact that this a One-Way street.  Travelling in the wrong direction is a driving offence that will be addressed by the Ontario Provincial Police if you are caught.

We thank you for your patience and continued support during this work. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
