Main Street Reconstruction Update - June 8, 2018

Main Street reconstruction

With the excellent productivity of JB Enterprises, the Town has been informed that the reconstruction will be progressing up to Robert Street Starting on Monday June 11, 2018. The first step of this work is to pulverize the existing asphalt, but leave it in place to minimize any erosion issues should we experience a significant rainfall event. This progress will also mean that the businesses and residents between Water Street/Simcoe Street and Robert Street will be switched over to the temporary watermain. The impact of this will be minimal and information regarding the switchover will be communicated by the contractor. JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending June 8th, 2018:

  • Temporary Watermain from the Water Street/Simcoe Street intersection to Robert Street has been super chlorinated and flushed. Regulatory bacteria testing is underway;
  • Sidewalk installation from Wolfe Street to Brock Street on the east side;
  • Sub Excavation and Granular Placement on Main Street south from Tessier Lane in preparation for asphalt;
  • Watermain started at Tessier Lane heading south on Main Street;
  • Placement of asphalt on Main Street from Wolfe Street to Tessier Lane;
  • Sanitary Main and Storm Main continues on Main Street heading south to Water Street; and,
  • Placement of asphalt on Sewage Treatment Lane.

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of June 11th, 2018 to June 15th, 2018:

  • Continue Sanitary Main and Storm Main installation from Tessier Lane to Robert Street;
  • Watermain installation from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
  • Sanitary laterals, Storm laterals, and Water services from Tessier Lane to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
  • Removal of Sanitary Bypass at the Simcoe Street/Water Street intersection and relocate at Robert Street;
  • Put full road closure at Main Street at Robert Street and pulverize asphalt from Water Street to Robert Street;
  • Continue sidewalk installation on the east side of Main Street from Brock Street to Tessier Lane;
  • Temporary Watermain connections will be completed from Water Street/Simcoe Street to Robert Street; and,
  • Excavation of granular, and Sub-drain placement south on Main to Water Street.

The progress of the reconstruction to the hill is somewhat monumental as it not only verifies that the contractor is on schedule, but it begins the phase of construction where the final product will produce defined social areas to complement the streetscaping in other areas of the project.

As communicated last week, the work involved will not be without challenges so please continue to be understanding with the Town and the Contractor as we complete the necessary work.

The contractor has set up detour routes and identified the affected businesses within each route to allow for patrons to access the businesses during each phase of the reconstruction. In some cases, additional signage has been installed in consultation with the contractor as the placement of the signs should not take away from the importance of the defined detour routes. This being said, please do not affix signage to clearly marked orange or white detour signs. This creates a potentially dangerous situation for the workers on site by distracting drivers when they are in an already heavily signed area.

We continue to thank you again and again for your patience and co-operation during this work. Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
