Main Street Reconstruction Update - October 12, 2018

Main Street Reconstruction Update - October 12, 2018

It seems as though every week from here until the end of the project will have milestone moments to celebrate as this week saw the placement of base asphalt from the Thompson Road to Jeffery Street and surface course asphalt being placed from Simcoe Street/Water Street to Wolfe Street. Also worth noting is the highly anticipated completion of the paving stones at the intersection of Robert Street and Main Street.   JB Enterprises Ltd. has completed the following work for the week ending October 12, 2018:

  • Completed paving stones in the Robert Street intersection;
  • Completed surface asphalt from Beck Boulevard to Water Street/Simcoe Street;
  • Removal of existing sanitary structures from Poyntz to Thompsons Road;
  • Completed CCTV Inspection to Thompsons Road;
  • Placement of Granular “A” from Edward Street to Thompsons Road;
  • Boulevard stones from Robert Street to Jeffery Street on-going;
  • Completed the crosswalk at the Poyntz Street Intersection;
  • Completed the paving stones in the parallel parking area on Main Street between Robert Street and Poyntz Street;
  • Completed the curbs to Thompsons Road including the intersection;
  • Installed traffic signals at the Poyntz Street and Edward Street Intersections; and,
  • Completed base asphalt from Jeffery Street to Thompson Road

The following items are scheduled to be completed for the week of October 15, 2018 to October 19, 2018:

  • Reduce Thompsons Road intersection to a single lane if needed and maintain single lane traffic controlled by flag persons;
  • Continue boulevard stones from Poyntz Street heading south;
  • Continue installation of site furnishings and veneer;
  • Install Poyntz Street intersection concrete base for paving stones;
  • Continue sidewalk from Jeffery Street to Thompsons Road;
  • Start paving stones at Poyntz Street Intersection after the concrete base in place.

With asphalt now placed at the top end of the Main Street, one would think that we now have a free pass to drive all the lanes but this will not be the case just yet. The sidewalks still need to be installed, topsoil and sod placed, boulevard paving stones and other decorative features installed.  This all means that JB Enterprises will use the lanes as necessary to keep the reconstruction site safe.  Please continue to proceed with caution when moving through the reconstruction zone.

As part of the Main Street Reconstruction project, there will be a right hand turn lane installed at the Thompson Road intersection coming into town.  For this reason, the historically significant portion of the entrance angel monument has been relocated to a safe location where it will not be damaged by winter maintenance operations.  The public works department is collectively working to find a solution to moving the stone wall to the new location and looking at other options should the wall be compromised when a second attempt is made as the initial attempt was unsuccessful.

Thank you to everyone for your continued patience and understanding.  Should you have any questions or concerns please contact the Public Works Department at 549-7992 or visit the Town of Penetanguishene website at www.penetanguishene.ca.
