Provincial Ban on Automated Speed Enforcement: Signage Removal in Penetanguishene
On November 3, 2025, the Government of Ontario passed the Building a More Competitive Economy Act, 2025 (Bill 56), which included amendments to the Highway Traffic Act prohibiting the use of automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras across the province. This ban officially took effect on November 14, 2025.
The provincial government explained that this change is part of a broader strategy to improve road safety through physical traffic-calming measures rather than automated enforcement. The province is investing $210 million through the Road Safety Initiatives Fund to support solutions such as speed bumps, raised crosswalks, roundabouts, and enhanced signage.
These measures aim to create safer streets while encouraging long-term improvements in driver behavior. Staff will be presenting options for traffic calming measures throughout the municipality for Council consideration in the New Year.
In response to this legislation, the Town has terminated its ASE program and will begin removing all “Municipal Speed Camera Coming Soon” signage from the following locations:
- Robert Street West (Owen Street to Lafontaine Road)
- Bellisle Road (Poyntz Street to Thompsons Road)
- Church Street (Fox Street to Navy Lane)
- Fox Street (Church Street to Broad Street)
Please note that no ASE cameras were ever activated at these locations, and signage removal is expected to be completed within two (2) weeks.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this process. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Public Works Department at 705-549-7992.
