Town of Penetanguishene Activates Cooling Locations During Heat Warning
Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for our region this week. Prolonged periods of high heat and humidity can pose significant health risks, particularly for older adults, young children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those who may not have access to air conditioning.
To help residents stay safe and comfortable during this extreme heat event, the Town of Penetanguishene has opened designated cooling centres at the following locations:
Cooling Centre Locations
Penetanguishene Public Library
24 Simcoe Street, Penetanguishene
Penetanguishene Memorial Community Centre (PMCC)
61 Maria Street, Penetanguishene
Both facilities are fully air-conditioned and offer access to drinking water. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these spaces to cool down as needed.
Recognizing Heat-Related Illness
Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly and should be taken seriously. Heat exhaustion may begin with symptoms such as heavy sweating, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, or fainting, often accompanied by cool, pale, or clammy skin. If not addressed, it can progress to heat stroke.
Heat stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency. Warning signs may include a very high body temperature (40°C or higher), confusion or disorientation, loss of consciousness, hot or flushed skin, a rapid pulse, and a severe headache. Immediate action is critical.
What To Do
If someone is showing signs of heat exhaustion, it is important to act promptly by moving them to a cool or shaded area, offering small amounts of water, and helping them lower their body temperature with cool cloths or a fan. Clothing should be loosened or removed as needed. If symptoms worsen or do not improve, medical attention should be sought.
If you suspect heat stroke, call 911 immediately. While waiting for emergency services, move the person to a cooler location and begin active cooling using cold water, ice packs, or damp cloths. Do not attempt to give fluids if the person is unconscious or not fully alert.
Staying Safe During Extreme Heat
Residents are strongly encouraged to take preventive measures during this heat event. Staying well hydrated by drinking water regularly. Outdoor activities should be limited during peak heat hours, typically between late morning and mid-afternoon. Wearing lightweight, light-coloured, and loose-fitting clothing can help reduce heat stress.
It is also important to check in on neighbours, friends, and family members who may be more vulnerable to extreme heat, including seniors and those with health conditions. Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle, as temperatures can rise rapidly to dangerous levels within minutes.
The Town of Penetanguishene encourages all residents to remain vigilant, take appropriate precautions, and make use of the available cooling centres throughout this heat warning.
