Town of Penetanguishene Clarifies Winter Road Operations

Update: Thank you to everyone that has reached out with concerns about our winter roads operations. Further to the notice provided on December 16, 2022, we would like to clarify the shift in winter operations of our Roads Department. Most importantly, with these slight operational changes, there will be NO noticeable difference to the road maintenance generally seen on our roads.

In the event of a snowstorm, the operators will deploy accordingly at 3:00 am to begin snow clearing on our streets and continue clearing snow as required. Where no weather/snow events occur, the Roads Department will work a standard shift of 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. In the event of multiple weather events, the Town is prepared to bring in a contracted service to provide snow clearing as required.  Removing snowbanks from the sides of the streets may see a slight delay compared to our usual road operations.

The Town will also continue to perform winter patrolling 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, and dispatch crews when and where required. The goal is to return to a two-shift model while meeting and exceeding the required service levels as soon as possible.

It is important to note that the Town operated similarly in the past prior to shifting to a two-shift system two seasons ago, and we will continue to meet our snow-clearing obligations per the minimum maintenance standards under the single-shift model.

Notice provided on December 16, 2022: The Town of Penetanguishene Public Works Department would like to advise all residents and businesses that the Roads Division will be reverting to a single-shift winter operations model (7:00 am to 3:30 pm) as of January 3, 2023, due to staffing shortages.

The two (2) shift winter operations model will be reinstated once staffing resources are available.
