Exploring Microtransit>
The Town of Penetanguishene is exploring alternative transit systems to better support our transit riders.
The Town has released a Joint Request for Proposals (RFP) with the Town of Midland to evaluate potential microtransit options for Penetanguishene and Midland, that, if approved, could transform and potentially replace, the current conventional Mid-Pen Transit system.
Microtransit is a flexible, on-demand form of public transportation that uses smaller ride-share vehicles with app-based scheduling and fare payments, providing a modern alternative to fixed-route traditional municipal bus services.
We are looking at microtransit as a way to continue to provide transportation services to those who need it, while also making it more cost-effective for the Town by reducing costs and streamlining operations. Microtransit is also a more affordable, flexible and convenient option for riders, and provides improved coverage
No. Mid-Pen Transit will continue to run on its regular routes during the RFP process.
Following the RFP process, Penetanguishene and Midland staff will provide separate, comprehensive reports to their respective Councils in early Fall 2025, outlining RFP results, anticipated benefits and recommended next steps.
